os means 'operating system'. This is a pretty common acronym. : dos - disk operating system, ios - iphone operating system, macos etc etc. so you have mentions of os 5, os 6 etc to show which version of the operating system is being referred to.

"posix" is a latest version of a operating system of "unix",published by ieee 1003.2 standard. Specifically, it's an acronym for Portable Operating Systems Interface. When used, it should specify which version of the specification is being referenced. E.g. POSIX.1-2008 is the latest.
When a system says it is unable to open an application because it is not supported it means that the application was written for a version of the system other than the one being used. For example newer software written to work with Mac OS X 10.6 may not always work with older versions of Mac OS X as it is requires features from the new version which are not in the older version. If software has specific system requirements these are usually stated on the packaging or on the developers website.
