Of the one thousand copies of the First Folio printed, 228 are known to still exist. Of these, 79 are held by the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington. This library was founded by Henry Clay Folger, who was a fanatical collector of First Folios. Twelve more are at the Meisei University in Tokyo, and two more at the British Library. Almost all of the others are held by libraries around the world. Sir Paul Getty owned one, one of the few in private hands.
