Eastenders first broadcast was on BBC One, on Feburary 19, 1985
EastEnders was launched to demonstrate the BBC's ability to produce popular programming. BBC wanted to bridge the gap between the network and its competitor, ITV's Coronation Street. EastEnders became wildly popular and displaced Coronation Street from the top of the ratings for the rest of the 1980s and much of the 1990s and 2000s. EastEnders only had 23 characters and Roly the dog to start with. The first episode of EastEnders was broadcast in the UK on BBC One on Tuesday 19 February 1985.
