The accession to the throne of England by the Scottish king James VI (James I of England). James was fascinated by witchcraft and Scottish history. The only problem is that this event did not take place in 1605, but rather in 1603. Some scholars think that there are allusions in the play to the Gunpowder Plot of November 5, 1605 and the subsequent trials.

Shakespeare was not inspired to write any of his plays by any event. He was exclusively inspired to write plays to make money so he could support his wife and children and, of course, himself. Writing plays was his job. He took his sources exclusively from books he had read and plays he had seen. Although there are short references to current events in the plays, such as the reference to the children's theatres in Hamlet Act 2 Scene 2, the plays themselves are almost never about current events. An exception might be The Tempest which is believed to owe some of its setting to a contemporary report of a shipwreck in the Bahamas.

Shakespeare wrote Macbeth as a tribute to the new king, James I. James was the new patron of the acting company and a descendant of Banquo. It may have been performed as part of the coronation.

What tragic event ended Shakespeare's writing career?

William Shakespeare stopped writing professionally in 1613, three years before he died. There has been no reason given for his stopping when he did. Many people erroneously believe the death of his son, Hamnet, was the reason, but Hamnet died 17 years before Shakespeare stopped his work. Shakespeare was 52 when he died - which was 17 years past the life expectancy of a Londoner in that time period due to all of the diseases (plague, syphilis, typhus, scurvy, tuberculosis, smallpox, malaria, dysentery) of that era.

Who was accused of writing the plays of William shakespeare?

Good grief, it wasn't a crime to write those plays, was it? In any event the person credited (a much better word than accused) with writing the plays was, during his lifetime and for about two hundred and fifty years afterwards, William Shakespeare and nobody else. The idea that someone other than Shakespeare might have written Shakespeare was not advanced until the mid-nineteenth century by a stark raving looney called Delia Bacon, who claimed Sir Francis Bacon as the author. Other people advanced as possible mysterious authors include Christopher Marlowe and the Earl of Oxford. Since none of these claims require any actual evidence, you can pick anyone who was alive at some point before Shakespeare actually started writing.
