Shakespearan sonnets are composed of 4 divisons: -They have 3 quatrain: which can be a 3 part argument or problem or can be illustrations of it - They have a volta which is usually the turning point of the argument -volta are usually found in the first line of the 3rd quatrain or the first line of the couuplet -They have a couplet which is usually the climax, the solution to the problem, or a comment given on the problem Shakespearan sonnets are 14 lined (4 lines per quatrain and 2 lines for couplet) lyric poem written in iambic pentameter. They are sad and melancholy and usually written about love. They are written in a ab-ab, cd-cd, ef-ef, g-g form they have 10 syllables per line
I believe they enjoyed the Galliard, but Elizabeth I particularly enjoyed La Volta. There is a painting of her dancing this with Robert Dudley. The male dancer would pick up the female dance around the waist and hoist her into the air - La Volta!
As with many of Shakespeare's sonnets, the turn comes just before the final couplet.
Your teacher probably wants you to say that a Shakespearean sonnet does not have a volta (the change in point of view which occurs between Octave and Sestet which is the defining characteristic of the Petrarchan sonnet). This isn't quite true. Several of Shakespeare's sonnets have very obvious voltas. One of the most interesting is sonnet LX where the volta appears to fall between lines 7 and 8, making an interestingly asymmetric movement which I have seen nowhere else in poetry. But Shakespearean sonnets don't usually have voltas, in fact only an author as daring as Shakespeare would even think of giving a Shakespearean sonnet a volta. (Though Donne, I suppose, was such another).
The Octave (First 8 lines) which sets up a problem or scenario and Sestet which attempts to resolve it (Last 6 lines). The volta (the turn in the poem) is around line 9.
The type of lyric poetry that includes a volta is a sonnet. A volta is a shift in thought or argument in the poem, often occurring between the octet and sestet in an Italian (Petrarchan) sonnet, or after the octave in an English (Shakespearean) sonnet.
