Shakespeare's plays were written for theatrical companies, and after 1594 exclusively for his own company The Lord Chamberlain's Men (later The King's Men). His long poems were written for publication from which he received part of the sale proceeds. The sonnets were likely written for private consumption by the people they are purportedly addressed to, but someone was able to gather them all together and print them in 1609.
