She is desperate to escape the cramped and desolate apartment that the Younger family lives in, and will go to any length to ensure that they get into a new house. She loves her son, but is loath to give him money and is straight with him about their economic issues. She loves her husband, too, and stands up for him, but doesn't support a lot of the decisions he makes and doesn't like his friends, who she views as untrustworthy and unsavory.
