They were very useful when it was wet and windy. Traveling by carriage was not the first option for a man as it was considered unmanly. The downside was that they were very slow, clumsy and usually got stuck in traffic jams. Most peasants travelled on foot if they were not wealthy enough to use horses or boats. They would usually wear leather sandals or go in bare feet. The roads were very muddy and people usually got infections because of the human waste that was deposited onto the roads. It was considered shameful for wealthy people to travel by foot.
