There are several opinions as to the who is the father of the short story. Washington Irving was the American writer to make use of this form in his book called The Sketch Book. Others would say that Nathaniel Hawthorne (Twice Told Tales) and or Edgar Allan Poe would be called that since they fairly perfected the form even before the literary term 'short story' became generally accepted to describe these short prose fiction works.
