A number of plays had fools or jesters of various kinds, to exploit the members of Shakespeare's company who were comedians--first Will Kemp and later Robert Armin. Touchstone from As You Like It is often costumed as a jester, as are Feste from Twelfth Night, the Fool from King Lear, Lavatch in All's Well that Ends Well, and Costard in Love's Labour's Lost. Some characters of this type are less likely to be costumed in this way, such as the bitterly cynical Apemantus in Timon of Athens or Thersites in Troilus and Cressida.
