During Shakespeare's time, fairies were believed to play tricks on humans at night. This belief was particularly popular in folklore and literature, often depicted as mischievous beings who would cause confusion and chaos, especially in romantic situations. In Shakespeare's play "A Midsummer Night's Dream," the character Puck, a fairy, embodies this trickster role. Such beliefs reflected the era's fascination with the supernatural and the unknown.
Davenant is supposed to have claimed so in a letter written in 1644. About this there are four possibilities: 1. There was no connection at all between Davenant and Shakespeare and he made the whole thing up. 2. Shakespeare actually was Davenant's illegitimate son. 3. Shakespeare was Davenant's godfather, so he was Shakespeare's son in this sense. 4. Shakespeare was Davenant's inspiration, so he was the son of his spirit in a kind of metaphorical sense. This is almost certainly what Samuel Butler meant when he said Davenant was Shakespeare's son. Possibilities number three and four are the most likely. Number two is so unlikely that we can probably rule it out.
In William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," Bottom, a weaver and one of the amateur actors, is transformed by the mischievous fairy Puck. After Bottom's fellow actors flee in fear at his unexpected transformation, Puck uses magic to give him the head of an ass. This transformation occurs while Bottom is rehearsing in the woods, and later, he encounters Titania, the fairy queen, who is enchanted to fall in love with him due to a spell.
