his family and friends published his work in around 1623. William Shakespeare burned his work after the actors remembered their lines for he feared that they would steal his work, which many people did. people who stole his work and actors who remembered their lines from Shakespeare plays also helped with the publishing of his work.

Shakespeare himself arranged for the publication of his long poems Venus and Adonis and The Rape of Lucrece which were popular and must have made him some money. However, all other publication was done without his input. Some Quarto-sized editions of single plays were based on audience or actor recollections (particularly the first quartos of Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet), but others were authorized by the Playing Company for whom he wrote them. After Shakespeare's death his friends and colleagues John Heminges and Henry Condell, on behalf of the same Playing Company, arranged for the publication of an omnibus collection of Shakespeare's plays, called The First Folio in 1623. Shakespeare's family had no say in the publication. Finally, the sonnets were published by Thomas Thorpe in 1608, but nobody knows for sure how he got them. Perhaps it was from the mysterious "Mr. W.H.", who Thorpe calls "the onlie begetter" of the volume.
