after some research, I found that the opera performed by Andrea Bocelli and Placido Domingo sang may have been Rossini's "Petite Messe Solennelle", but that they have also performed together in 2009 at Teatro Del Silenzio, and performed Nessun Dorma as a duet. Hopefully this was the answer you were looking for.
Yes it is a brilliant version sang it at the end of a concert I'm trying to find it online!
The aria is actually spelled "Nessun dorma" and the character who plays the part (or sings the aria rather) is Calaf, who is the unknown prince. In Italian he is "il principe ignoto". If you want to know who specifically sang the aria in the year 1960, then that would be Jussi Björling, who made a recording of the aria in the 60's, though many tenors may have performed that aria in that year.

== == == == Luciano Pavarotti's "signature" piece, one he always sang at concerts and that was strongly associated with him, was an aria (a melodic song) called "Nessun Dorma" from the opera Turandot, by Puccini. It is very lyrical and ends with thrilling high notes that he always delivered with a lot of dramatic emphasis. He was also famous for his roles in the operas La Boheme, by Puccini, and Il Trovatore, by Verdi, and many more. Pavarotti also liked to sing traditional Italian songs, such as "Funiculi, Funicula" and "O Sole Mio."Maestro Pavarotti was a phemonenally gifted singer and much-beloved performer whose larger-than-life personality was matched by an incredible voice. It was a privilege to be alive while he was among us.

Slaves sang while they were working in the fields to pass the time away. Usually they would sing about home or family, and sometimes a song that they would sing would be a coded message.
