Shakespeare as you probably already found out, married a young woman named Anne Hathaway when he was just 18, however she wasn't a secret; it is said that when he was much older he had fallen in love with a young actress who I believe was only 16 years of age, and of whom he was too ashamed to tell anyone about

Speculation is rife about this one. A lot of it is based on the sonnets, which appear to show a passionate involvement with a young man and a dark woman. Assuming the sonnets to be autobiographical in content, critics has postulated either the man or the woman or both as a love-interest for Shakespeare. Indeed, the names of a large number of historical people have been proposed as the identities of these two.

However, we can never know for sure. A sexual relationship with anyone other than his wife was a crime; a sexual relationship with another man was a very serious crime indeed. Shakespeare, unlike his son-in-law Quiney, was never convicted of these crimes, which meant that if there was any sexual hanky-panky, they were very discreet about it. Which is why we have no evidence of these possible affairs.
