There is no record of the initial use of the particular dance step. The singer Cab Calloway and others were performing similar moves (backslide) as early as 1932. French mime masters recorded it on film in 1944, around the time that Marcel Marceau began using it in his "Walk Against the Wind" routine. It was performed by James Brown, notably in the 1980 film, The Blues Brothers.
But its popularity increased beginning in March, 1983, when Michael Jackson made it his signature move.
