There were several. Richard Tarleton, the chief actor of Queen Elizabeth's Men, was the outstanding comic actor of the 1570s and boosted his company to become the top company in England at the time. Later, Will Kempe, an actor first with the Admiral's and then as a partner in The Lord Chamberlain's Men was a hugely popular performer. He was famous for his "jigs" or dances and comic turns to close a show. He may have had artistic differences with Shakespeare, and it may be of him that Shakespeare was thinking when he wrote in Hamlet, "And let those that play your clowns speak no more than is set down for them." Kempe may have had a habit of adlibbing and stealing the spotlight from Burbage. In any event he left the Chamberlain's Men and amazed England by dancinghalf-way across the country! He was replaced by Robert Armin, a more cynical and sardonic clown, whose style we see in the Fool in King Lear or Feste in Twelfth Night.

All of the actors in Shakespeare's day were men. Men and boys also played the women's parts. The most famous actor of Shakespeare's time was Edward Alleyn, lead actor in The Lord Admiral's Men. The next most famous was Richard Burbage, the leader of The Lord Chamberlain's Men. Richard Tarleton was a famous comic actor in the 1580s when he led Queen Elizabeth's Men at the Curtain Theatre. Will Kempe was another famous comic actor, originally with The Lord Chamberlain's Men and afterwards. John Lowin worked with Worcester's Men and afterwards with the King's Men, succeeding Burbage as leading man of that company. Gabriel Spenser was a controversial actor who worked with Pembroke's Men, the Admiral's Men, and maybe with the Chamberlain's Men, and who is most famous for being killed by Ben Jonson in a duel. Thomas Heywood was an actor with Worcester's Men also well known as a playwright. Christopher Beeston was a boy actor who went on to become an actor and later a director with Worcester's (later Queen Anne's) Men

Greek Tragedies are highly concentrated, follow the Unities of Time, Place, and Action, have a chorus, and have a late Point of Attack. Shakespeare uses subplots, has comic relief, ignores the unities of Time and Place, and includes violence onstage.
