In 1939 at the 12th Academy Awards the Best Picture award went to Gone with the Wind. It also won for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Vivian Leigh); Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Hattie McDaniel - the first African-American to be nominated for and win an Oscar); Best Director (Victor Fleming); Best Writing - Screenplay (Sidney Howard) as well as Best Cinematography - Color, Best Film Editing and Best Art Direction. The other nine nominees were Dark Victory, Wuthering Heights, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Ninotchka, Love Affair, Goodbye Mr. Chips, Stagecoach, Of Mice and Men and The Wizard of Oz.
