Beethoven's opera, Fidelio was originally titled Leonore. He wrote three overtures, each time deciding the overture was too strong to serve as a prelude to the opera. After he revised the opera and changed the title he wrote a fourth overture, this one bearing the new title, Overture to Fidelio. All four share melodic features and a similar structure. Some conductors have inserted the 3rd (and most famous) of the Leonore overtures as an intermezzo between the last scenes of the opera.
