Suggesting to an Elizabethan woman that she should perform on stage would be insulting to her, in the same way as suggesting that she walk down the street naked would be. Not that the punishment was all that serious--the famous Elizabethan transvestite Mary Frith appeared on the stage of the Fortune theatre playing a lute and singing and basically got off with a warning. The theatre owners risked having their theatre closed down by letting her do that.
