Because of the recession many Broadway shows had to close and the original cast left. Though Spring Awakening had a fairly good crowd following, it's ticket sales were not good enough to keep going during the down turn. It wasn't the only one though, Hairspray, Spamalot, Grease and several other shows closed in just January 2009 alone.
