Isabel Allende began to write because she was writing a letter to her dying grandfather. This letter turned into her first novel, The House of the Spirits. Allende has been writing novels ever since, and her most recent novel is The Island Beneath the Sea, which was released in the fall of 2010.

Darn Right She did!
Well, this was probably Neruda's last poem. He wrote it while sick with prostate cancer in the weeks before the U.S. backed military government overthrew the elected government of Salvador Allende in Chile on September 11, 1973 (the "Other 9-11"). He was a friend and supporter of Allende. He died a couple weeks after the coup. Some saw the military government hastened his death with poisons. Others say he simply died of a broken heart as he saw what was happening to his beloved Chile. I think the poem speaks of the turmoil and the violence of those last months of the Allende government in Chile.

Yes, Isabel Allende is related to Ignacio Allende, as he is her distant ancestor. Ignacio Allende was a key figure in the Mexican War of Independence, and Isabel Allende, the renowned Chilean author, has acknowledged this familial connection in her works and interviews. However, the exact nature of their relationship is more historical than direct, as they belong to different generations.
