there is a continuous musical flow within each act.

there are no breaks where applause can interrupt.

the vocal line is inspired by the rhythms and pitches of the German text.

They are called music dramas because the story is told as much by the orchestra as by the text, through Wagner's system of leading motives and identifying themes for each character. Wagner felt that operas before him were just music set to words, and he wanted the music itself to tell the story.

What kind of stories provided the basis for the earliest operas?

Opera (English plural: operas; Italian plural: opere) is an art form in which singers and musicians perform a dramatic work combining text (called a libretto) and musical score, usually in a theatrical setting. It started in Italy at the end of the 16th century (with Jacopo Peri's lost Dafne, produced in Florence around 1597) and soon spread through the rest of Europe: Schütz in Germany, Lully in France, and Purcell in England all helped to establish their national traditions in the 17th century. In the 18th century, Italian opera continued to dominate most of Europe, except France, attracting foreign composers such as Handel. Opera seria was the most prestigious form of Italian opera, until Gluck reacted against its artificiality with his "reform" operas in the 1760s. Today the most renowned figure of late 18th century opera is Mozart, who began with opera seria but is most famous for his Italian comic operas, especially The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Così fan tutte, as well as The Magic Flute, a landmark in the German tradition.

What is the meaning of the poem 'Some Opposites' by Richard Wilbur?

The short poem Some Opposites (1994?) examines how we consider words to be opposites, either from their different traits or as seen from a different perspective. For example, the opposite of a doughnut could be simply a cookie, which seems to have a large hole "around it" rather than inside it.(*there is a related link to the poem below)

Should Richard Wagner's music be banned in Israel?

This is a sensitive question for many Israelis because of Wagner's noted Anti-Semitism during his life and the fact that the Nazis often used his music during the Holocaust. Many Israelis would rather that Wagner is not played in Israel, but most would not support an outright ban on it. They would prefer a soft ban in the sense that you could play it, but that you would not get anyone to listen to you.

How did wolfgang amadeus Mozart change the world?

His late dramatic pieces, particularly "The Magic Flute", propounded ideals for the betterment of society, an enterprise taken up in the following century by Wagner. Some of the Magic Flute maxims were merely anodyne, like "Love is all" but others were pernicious, like "Women need the guidance of men." Wagner meant his early operas to hasten political revolution; however, his later ones rather encourage withdrawal from an incorrigible world.

This German composer argued that drama was the highest art form as it brought together all the other art forms?

Richard WagnerIn his "Outlines of the Artwork of the Future," Richard Wagner, the 19th-century German composer, argued that art and culture must reflect each other. Wagner argues that much of modern art-and his argument sounds strangely modern-does not reflect the culture of its times but, rather, at its best "resembles an orator who should seek to address himself in a foreign tongue to a people which does not understand it." Much of what we call modern art is still not understood by the masses. And so-called "found art," or art that is made up of discarded elements of common life, like bicycles and old sinks, is even more misunderstood. Wagner goes on to argue that true art embraces all humanity so that "each unit who is inspired with a true art-instinct develops to the highest his own particular faculties . . . for the glory of general Manhood in Art." Wagner argues that drama is the highest art form, as it brings together painting, architecture, and the other arts.
