Shakespeare's plays continue to be popular for many reasons. They are full of action and incident, have great characters and terrific lines. The storylines (almost all borrowed and adapted by Shakespeare) are so good, they have become iconic in the form Shakespeare presented them.
Of course, plays do not exist in limbo--they have to be produced and acted well if they are to come alive. It's hard to enjoy Shakespeare (or any other playwright) if badly acted. So, find a good production or a good film and watch a play yourself to find out why people enjoy them.
