People in Shakespeare's day had to be very careful what they said. Say the wrong word and you end up in a torture chamber. Therefore they had to be very clear and careful about what they were saying.

At the same time, they sometimes tried to say things ambiguously when it suited them. A Catholic priest actually published a book in 1605 on how to be an "equivocator" and say one thing when you mean something else.

But most of all, the Elizabethans delighted in language. They loved new words, wordplay, puns, and beautiful ways of expressing things. This may be difficult to understand in a time when we very rarely try to make anything beautiful, especially our language, but it was a very real factor in the way people expressed themselves for many centuries.
