It was a kind of tradition. Marlowe, in particular, had made terrific use of it, making it enormously popular at just the time that Shakespeare was starting out. Greene said of him in 1592 that he could "bombast out a blank verse as the best of you" showing that everyone else was using this verse form at the time.
