Why did the phantom of the opera like Christine?

I think he wanted to erase any "other rings" that would symbolize her engagement to someone else, by making that same ring a symbol of HIS and her marriage. And then Christine finally made it completely theirs by giving it back to him (the Phantom), likely as a token of her love even though she chose to live with Raoul.

It depends on how you look at it. It could be either, as well as both. In the movie version, which the ring thing is from, I would say it's both. She cares for the Phantom, and wants him to have a part of her with him. But in cases like the book, Christine would give it back to him purely as a sign she chose Raoul. She can't possibly accept such a token while with another man. And the ring belongs to Erik in the first place, which is why she wouldn't run off with it.

Why did the Phantom of the Opera like Christine? This is just my opinion of what read of the original and several movies. The Phantom likes Christine as student/teacher relationship, he discovered she had potential singing perfectly and beautifully, he wanted to shape her skills to perfection then it blossom into a common bound, they were both alone, sad, they needed each other.

Erik capture Christine because he loves her. He wants her to marry him until she unmasked him, when this happens, he is afraid, she is scared of him.
