They need an OS as this is the main program that operates the computer. Without this installed, all you would be able to do is switch on a device and nothing would happen. A better way to explain it would be that an OS is the programming of the computers brain, without it the computer would not know what to do with information imputed to it. OS systems take away the need to type in command language into the computer, so it also makes computing more efficent.
