Mercutio tels his "Queen Mab" speech to Romeo to foreshadow the coming events in the play and reveal background. Shakespeare often tells what is going to happen then tells it as it is happening then retells what happened.

So what is foreshadowed:

  • Queen Mab's story shows an increasing path of violence - Romeo's future as well
  • Mercutio becomes madder and more erratic as the story goes on - Romeo's story does the same
  • There is a sence of lack of control in both stories.
  • The Queen Nab story is a cute story with an undercurrent of death and violence (the insects in her carriage didn't volunteer their parts) and Romeo's romance will have a violent streak
  • Even the dreams Mab inspires sound pretty horrible (read the soldiers) Romeo's dream of love with Juliette will become horrible as well.
