Tybalt is a guy that likes fighting. Mercutio makes fun of him because he studies the art of Fencing. For that kind of guy, a feud is an ideal situation to use his anger and love of chaos. "Peace?" he says, "I hate the word as I hate Hell, all Montagues and thee." That just about sums Tybalt up. He himself is not even a Capulet; his cousin (Lady Capulet) is married to a Capulet. But why pass up a good excuse for a neverending series of fights?

So when Tybalt sees Romeo at the Capulet party, he wants to fight him then and there, and is only barely forestalled by Capulet himself, who points out that Romeo is causing no trouble and seems to be a nice fellow. Tybalt leaves in a rage, but is not to be denied his fight. He sends a letter with a challenge to Romeo in it and then goes prowling the street looking for him.
