By compressing the events of the story, Shakespeare was able to give it a breathlessness that makes us think of Romeo and Juliet being swept away on a tide of events. Shakespeare compressed events in other stories as well. This is especially noticeable in the histories, where the events of twenty years are portrayed as if they happened in a couple of weeks or months. Shakespeare did this to keep the flow of the story going. But it is nowhere as pronounced as it is in Romeo and Juliet.
