The Friar had hoped that the joining of the children of the two fighting families would end the hate between them and finally bring peace to both. However the death/loss of their child from either families point of view is cause purely because of the other family and so would therefore cause a bigger rift between the familes and adds more fuel to the flames of their hatred for each other.

Therefore it is ironic that it had the opposite result of what he had aimed for.
