What is Street dance dance?

"Street dance" in formal dance terminology refers to the dances that evolved in urban areas. Towards the end of the "industrial revolution", the world became urbanized and dance professionals needed to distinguish the dances from performance dances (such as Ballet) and tribal/folk dance (Irish jig / African imported rhythm dance), so the term "street. dance" was coined. Dances such as the clog evolved in industrial urban environments, such as the cotton mill factories in Lancashire (UK), whereby the local workers would mimic the machine's rhythm. The clog was also largely danced in actual streets as part of parades, etc. The dance was largely similar to Irish step dancing, i.e. river dance and jigging. When the clog arrived in America, it was welcomed due to its similarity to the folk dances already brought over by the Irish, Spanish and African slaves. In Peru, a similar dance had already been born, named Zapateo. Black Americans especially, would mix clogging, tribal footwork and zapateo together to make the "Tap dance", etc. Tap dance lead to the later birth of many jazz, line, swing and funk dances. Almost all of Afro-American dances were street dances, no doubt due to the fact the black community were living in mostly urban environments. White people tended to abandon street dance for commercial dances invented purely for Pop Music tracks, ballet or just were too busy to dance at all. However, eventually white people began to tolerate black people more, the result was the "rock n roll" music genre and its dance scene. When funk was popular in America, small venues were set up for people to dance in. People would MASH up fad dance with accidental movements to make their own moves. This lead to Locking, Popping, Hustle, Waacking and the Oakland Boogaloo. Northern soul was imported into the UK at the time, leading to its fans producing the first real footwork based street dance, the "Northern Soul dance". Northern Soul dance eventually found itself in America. People would dance it to funk music in clubs and discos. In the Bronx of New York, DJs were using dub techniques to mix music. As soon as DJs worked out the floorworkers preferred dancing to break beats, they started looping them. Northern Soul dance was renamed as 'break dance', the music made by looping samples on turntables was eventually called 'hip hop'. Hip hop music eventually saw the introduction of MCing and rapping. As rap music, hip hop became popular, and like house, it spawned many street dances. In hip hop culture, people were using street dance to prove ghetto territory. Hip hop thus became a highly competition-proud community. House, trance and rave street dance were similar, except people were dancing for fun rather than this.
