It's better for him to play his cards close to his chest at this point and wait for his position to be stronger before making an overt power grab.
The allegation of trying to become a king was the worse accusation a man would have to face during the Roman Republic. The Republic had been established with the overthrow of the last king of Rome in 509 BC who was a tyrant. The Romans decided to do away with the monarchy to prevent rule by one man which could lead to the return of tyranny. They swore that they would not allow anyone to become a king ever again. A man was executed and another one was forced to commit suicide in the 5th century BC because they were suspected of trying to become kings.
