In the min-19th Century, theater had house orchestras which would play background music during the play, a forerunner of the film soundtrack. Stealing an idea from Opera, the musicians would play a theme for each of the main characters: heroic music for the hero, romantic music for the love-interest, and music in a minor key for the villain, leaving no room for interpretation for the audience, and lacking subtlety in the plot or characterization.
