Dylan Thomas' Deaths and Entrances was written during the London Blitz. Its title is taken from a sermon (Death's Duel) by the great metaphysical poet John Donne, who was also Dean of St. Pauls. In Donne's sermon, the dean argues that being born is a kind of death, since it separates us from God, and our bodies are a kind of coffin, since they also separate us from the true life of the spirit.Dylan Thomas was not a very devout Christian (it is a moot point if John Donne was either) but Dylan was aware that life is temporary, and death is permanent - and that this makes death real in a way that life is not. The idea of dying in an incendiary raid (when you completely cease to be very quickly) was one that fascinated Dylan; he wrote several poems around it - this one, A Refusal to Mourn, Ceremony after a Fire Raid, Among those killed. In Deaths and Entrances Dylan ponders what it means to be killed in an incendiary raid. On the one hand we stop being, since we die. On the other hand we become permanent (after we are dead, we stop changing). There is no resolution in this poem - Dylan works through a few ideas without finally deciding what he thinks. If you want to see the poem that finally comes out of these ideas, try A Refusal to Mourn ...

However, his executor, Sir Sydney Carlyle Cockerell, insisted that he be placed in the abbey's Poets' Corner. A compromise was reached whereby his heart was buried at Stinsford with Emma, and his ashes in Poets' Corner.

The thesis statement of Lewis Thomas's essay "Notes on Punctuation" is that proper punctuation is essential for effective communication as it helps to clarify meaning and improve readability in writing. Thomas argues that punctuation is not just a set of arbitrary rules but a vital component of language that shapes our understanding and interpretation of text.
