The old story is that he got in trouble for poaching game and had to run away to avoid the law, but that is now almost totally discredited. He became a husband and father at an unusually young age and before he was established in a trade. He may have been dissatisfied with the prospect of tanning leather all his life and thought (as many people have over the years) that more opportunities would open up in the city.

Most of its partners had previously been partners in other acting companies, particularly Lord Strange's Men, which had gone broke due to the long theatre closures in 1593-4. Apparently this was not true of Shakespeare; as far as we can tell this was the first time he was a partner in an acting company.
