Why was wiliam Shakespeare famous?

Shakespeare wrote over thirty plays, many of them among the world's best comedies, tragedies, histories, and tragicmedies. He wrote over 150 sonnets, many of which are considered the best in the English language. He was a partner in one of the most successful acting companies of his time and owned a share in two of the most successful playhouses of his day. He bought the second largest house in his hometown, and a suite of apartments (a condo) in the building housing one of those playhouses. He died rich and famous, and a true artist. That is a hard hat trick to pull off.

People perform his plays, a lot. People make movies out of his plays, a lot. School curricula teach his plays and poetry, an awful lot. People read his stuff in their spare time. People write books about him which they publish and sell. News reports always carry the story every time someone claims to have found a new play by him, or a new portrait of him, or some new reason why he isn't himself. People have blogs about him, and websites about him, and argue about him on forums. A lot. An awful lot.

When an awful lot of people are interested in you and your work, that makes you famous, right? I guess so.
