In Shakespeare's time, the plays were often performed in daytime because there was no electricity, so if the plays had been performed at night it would have been too dark to see the play. Some of the theatres (including the Blackfriars which Shakepeare had a leg of) were indoors and were lit by candles. The indoor theatres could have performances at night or in winter when it was too dark to use the outdoor ones.
