Most of what we know about them comes from what other people in the play say about them, but when a character says something, it is the character talking, not Shakespeare. Tybalt describes Romeo as a "villain" but that is how Tybalt sees it, not how Shakespeare saw it, nor how most of the audience is going to see it.

The closest we come to an objective viewpoint in any of Shakespeare's plays is when there is a chorus. The purpose of the chorus is generally to explain the situation at the beginning of a play or scene, especially where there has been some significant time or place change that will not become clear from the dialogue. Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare's plays where he uses this device. The Chorus describes the couple as "a pair of star-crossed lovers". As famous as this line is, all it really tells us is that Romeo and Juliet are in love and they are going to have bad luck. It's not much of a description really, but that was not the purpose of the Chorus anyway.

Great to see this Platonic topic revived. Okay, they are also called, more accurately, the Three relations, as Unity implies One- and there are three. they are the relation of Time, Place, and action. originally a stage play was supposed to take place in (real time) like some television sitcoms, without any meanwhiles or plot lags, Relation of time was usually a 24 hr. period. I don"t think this replies to R&J as there were gang fights and so on that suggested the story- if it was in real life was spread out over maybe a few weeks. The Unity of place implied a static setting, also does not fit here. the Unity or relation of action means no crossing of Genres- if something starts out as a comedy, it doesn"t turn tragic ( as did the offscreen death of the title character in Mister Roberts) if something is a comedy- it is funny, a tragedy, the opposite, and no mixing of genres, now shall we go to art class and a discussion of the Five Platonic solids? Plato was quite a Man.
