During the fifth scene of "Romeo and Juliet," Romeo and Juliet meet for the first time at Capulet's party. They flirt with one another. Romeo playfully pretends that Juliet is a saint that Romeo must kiss in order to absolve his sins. Juliet, amused by Romeo's speech, agrees and they share their first kiss. Afterwards, Juliet claims that Romeo's sin is now on her lips, so Romeo kisses her again to take his "sin" back.

Romeo talks about how he is depressed. Mercutio wants to talk about love, then does talk at extraordinary length on the subject of dreams. They also talk about the party they are about to attend.

Their first conversation is about whether Romeo should get to kiss Juliet. His pick-up line is "If I profane with my unworthiest hand this holy shrine, the gentle sin is this: my lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand to smooth this rough touch with a tender kiss." Or in simpler but much less cool language, "If I hurt your hand by holding it, let me kiss it better." What makes this cool is that Romeo is expressing himself with words like "profane", "holy", "shrine", "sin" and "pilgrims", which makes it look like he's talking about religion, when he is really trying to snog Juliet. And Juliet picks up on this and continues the conversation using all this religious imagery while still really discussing whether or not Romeo can kiss her.
