Being 'free' today vs being 'free' during the 18th century are two very different things. I don't know if you can really say that people during one time frame were 'more' free than the others.
During both periods, you could always walk away from everything and try to set up a home, farm or living area by yourself. Perhaps this is what is really meant by 'being free'.

Opponents of Enlightenment ideas often censored writings that challenged traditional beliefs, banned books that promoted new ideas, and persecuted individuals who dared to spread Enlightenment ideologies through censorship laws, book burnings, and suppression of free speech. They also used propaganda and the manipulation of information to discredit Enlightenment thinkers and their ideas.
If there were such a thing as "Enlightenment" then all the ideas would be non consequential in the first place. You may as well make up your own Ideas, as to what Enlightenment is, or would be, or should be, or could be, but in the end who the heck cares. One of the ideas was to apply natural law to human societies. Another one was something of the government. The last one would be natural rights.
Adam Smith's ideas, particularly those outlined in his book "The Wealth of Nations," influenced the Enlightenment by emphasizing the importance of free markets, individual self-interest, and specialization in driving economic growth. His ideas helped shape the intellectual environment of the time by advocating for limited government intervention in economic affairs and promoting the idea of economic liberalism. Smith's work contributed to the spread of Enlightenment ideals such as reason, progress, and individual liberty.
Enlightenment thinkers often gathered in salons to engage in intellectual discussions, exchange ideas, and debate various topics such as politics, philosophy, science, and culture. These gatherings provided a space for the free exchange of ideas and the cultivation of critical thinking, which were central to the Enlightenment movement.
Switzerland and the Netherlands were the most liberal countries at the time so the philosophes/enlightenment thinkers would have their books published there because they risked it being banned or burned if they tried to publish somewhere else. The peak of the Enlightenment was in France, however, because: 1). French was the international language (similar to what English is today) 2). French intellectuals were not persecuted or punished severely 3). French people had the habit of preaching their ideas to the public

The Declaration of Independence is in fact connected to the Enlightenment movement which swept through western civilization beginning in the 17th century. With its emphasis upon reason, and choice, and the collective intent of free people in association, the Declaration is a clear expression of fundamental Enlightenment ideals and values.

The Enlightenment affected many of the Founding Fathers, such as Jefferson and Madison, because they were young, highly educated aristocrats who found the concept of free will, and a government operating for, not against the people attractive. Many passages in the United State's early documents show influences from Enlightenment thinkers such as Rousseau, Hobbes and Locke.

The main idea that led to the American Revolution was that people should not be taxed if they do not have representation in the body that is taxing them. Another idea is that people should be free to choose who it is that governs them. self government and individual rights (gradpoint)
People Got to be Free
It means the people who founded our country had to fight for the freedom of future generations. It means those who wish to be free today must also be willing to fight and die for that freedom when needed. "Liberating strife" is the fight for freedom. It means freedom is not free.
