Father Serra's real name is Miguel Jose Serra. He was born at Petra on the Island of Mallorca, Spain. At the age of 16 he entered the service of the Catholic Church. Father Serra entered a Franciscan monastery at age 17 and became a Franciscan friar seven years later, in 1737. Father Serra was founder of the first nine missions. Father Serra volunteered to serve the Franciscan missions in the new world. Father Serra died at the Mission San Carlos Borromeo.
