No, cows do not lay down when it's going to rain. This is a common myth, but there is no scientific evidence to support it. Cows may lay down for various reasons, such as resting or seeking shelter, but it is not related to predicting the weather.

Why do cows sit down when its raining?

Cows only lay down when they are chewing their cud and resting after eating their fill. They don't lay down for any other reason, even when a storm or rain-shower is coming or happens. See the related question below for more.

Do cows lie down when it is going to rain?

No. Cows are tough creatures, and can withstand pretty well anything that's thrown at them (except hurricanes, floods and tornadoes of course...) There is no evidence suggesting that cows have porous skin in their legs when make their bones soft which makes them "lie down" when it rains, nor about the gas in the rumen being subject and sensitive to changes to atmospheric pressure, nor that the rain hurts the cow's udders, or any other claims that attempt to support that cows lie down when it is going to rain or when it does rain. Because that's all they are: claims with no proven scientific evidence supporting them. And a lot of the "evidence" that people try to put out there to support this "claim" are so far-fetched they're simply laughable among the cattle-producer and veterinary-medical-animal-health community!! Any rancher, farmer, ranch manager, farm kid, trail boss, cowboy/cowgirl, etc., will tell you you are full it when you say: "Did you know that cows lie down when it's going to rain?" And they will go to lengths to prove it to you that that old wives-tale is false. Go ahead, if you don't believe this answer, go to a farm or ranch that has cattle living outside 24/7 and see for yourself if they lie down when/before it rains!! As far as I'm aware, and throughout the years I've been on the farm, I've never seen our cattle lay down when it rains or when it is about to rain. Often they're up at the bale feeder, at the feed bunk, or busy grazing in the pasture before or when it starts to rain. Some cattle are more sensitive to getting wet than others, and will head for the sheds or a grove of trees if it gets too much for them. Others simply either don't give a darn getting wet or love it when it rains, and will stay out in it (standing up, mind you!) throughout the rain shower! If it's a cold rain, or a rain that is really heavy, they will head for shelter, but never lay down in the middle of it. The only time, as mentioned in the Farmer's Almanac article (see related link below), a cow, steer, bull, heifer, etc. will lay down is a) they're tired and need a nap, b) they are chewing their cud, or c) are too sick or have some sort of injury that disables them to get up on their feet. But never simply because it's about to rain! In the context of "you know it's going to rain when the cows lay down" is simply ludicrous in itself. If this is true, we'd be getting rain non-stop, every single day (or twice to three times a day, which is the average number of times cattle do lay down to chew their cud and loiter around) of the month and the year! This obviously does not happen in the real world, as many a cattle producer and meteorologist will tell you. So no, this is a myth and an old wives tail that has no scientific merit to it whatsoever.

Do cows like places with rain?

Most don't. Most would rather take shelter under a grove of trees or a shed than stand or lay out in the rain. But there are other times they don't care, just so long as the rain isn't a heavy down-pour, and they're happy to lay out or graze in a light drizzle.

Do cows lie down to sleep?

They don't. This is a myth. Cattle will just keep on grazing or head for shelter when it rains. Most cattle don't give a hoot whether they get wet or not. If it's a light rain, they'll just keep grazing. If it's a heavy downpour or a cold rain that chills you right to the bone, then they will head for shelter (a grove of trees, a barn or a shed) and bunch up together to keep warm. An experienced cattle producer will tell you that it's not true that cattle will lay down when it's going to rain or even when it does rain. And even an animal scientist can tell you that cattle don't have this barometric-pressure sensing thing that makes them "have to" lay down right before it rains. The only time cattle will lay down, even when it's all together, is when they're chewing the cud or need a time to rest. Cattle are herd animals, and do anything together, from eating to sleeping to even mating.

Do cows lay eggs or milk duds?

Cows don't lay eggs, or milk duds. Cows have calves and produce milk. Bulls produce semen to fertilize the cows.

Do cows lay down when its raining so they have dry grass to eat?

No. Cows don't lay down when it rains: this is a myth. Also, cattle really don't care whether the grass they eat is wet or dry. Just as long as it tastes good or is palatable, then they'll eat it.

Why do cows lay eggs?

Cows are mammalian creatures, and therefore do not lay eggs. The only known species of mammals that lay eggs are the platypusand the echidna.

Why do cows all lay down at the same time?

Cows often lay down at the same time due to their social nature and herd instincts. When one cow decides to rest, others in the herd may follow suit to feel safe and secure. This behavior is a way for cows to bond and communicate with each other, as well as to protect themselves from potential threats.

What do the cows do when they are not being milked and are they able to roam around or lay down comfortably If they like?

Actually this really depends on the dairy operation! Some dairies have cows that are allowed to roam around AND lay down comfortably if they wanted, other dairies have cows where they just stay in stanchions that are wide enough for them to lay down comfortably whenever they wanted. I've never heard of a dairy operation where they didn't have anything that allowed cows to lay down when they wanted. Maybe not so much roam around, though there's a large number of dairies have milking facilities where cows simply walk in, get milked, then walk out again to their corrals in the barn or under a shed or out to pasture if it's summer. But basically, when they're not being milked they're eating, sleeping or laying/standing around chewing cud and socializing with other cows they're in the barn or pasture with.
