In general, honesty is better than dishonesty, and complete honesty is better than partial honesty, however, there are many different kinds of situations and it is sometimes necessary to be partially or completely dishonest. For example, there were some people during WW II who hid Jews from the Nazis, and in order to do so they had to lie. It was by far the lesser evil. There are other situations in which distortion of the truth is justifiable. Sometimes we withhold a painful truth from someone who is not emotionally prepared to receive it, particularly if that person is a child. There are endless numbers of situations whose moral elements are complicated. We cannot adopt an absolute insistence on honesty at all times in all situations, with no exceptions.
