José Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda was always an intelligent child, reading and writing at an early age. He was first educated under Justiniano Aquino Cruz in Binan, Laguna. He then enrolled for a brief time at Colegio de San Juan de Letran. He later enrolled in Ateneo Municipal de Manila and graduated as an "outstanding" student. His time at Ateneo Municipal de Manila overlapped with classes at University of Santo Tomas. He switched to medicine and attended the Medical School of Santo Tomas.
