The name Plato was a nickname, the word translates into broad. This name was given to him by his Wrestling coach. Some people take this to mean he was fat, some people take to to mean he had a wide frame.

It's just funnier and more interesting to say he was fat, but since he took wrestling seriously enough to have a coach, I'm having a hard time imagining he could really be that fat. I mean there is a style of wrestling called greco-roman to this day, I doubt it was a bunch of fatasses.

Also in The Republic he makes a big deal about how men should be physically fit, but you know, Greeks. So make of that what you will.
