In literature, formal realism lies with the rise of the novel.
Novel readers want...
1. A specific time and place
2. Identities of characters with realistic and full names
3. Relatable language
4. Claims to truth
This is according to Ian Watt, whom I poorly paraphrased
The key difference between anti-realism and realism in philosophy is their stance on the existence of objective reality. Realism believes in the existence of an objective reality independent of human perception, while anti-realism argues that reality is either subjective or constructed by human minds.
Realism in philosophy holds that there is an objective reality that exists independently of our perceptions or beliefs, while anti-realism argues that reality is either subjective or constructed by human minds. Realism asserts that truth is objective and can be discovered, while anti-realism suggests that truth is relative or dependent on individual perspectives.
The rejection of 19th century romanticism was associated with the movement known as realism. Realism sought to depict everyday life and society with accuracy and without idealization, moving away from the emotional and fantastical qualities of romanticism. Artists and writers in the realist movement focused on presenting the world as it was, often highlighting social issues and the struggles of ordinary people.
Realism in art and literature aims to depict things as they are in reality, focusing on accurate representation and detail. Non-realism, on the other hand, involves abstract or imaginative elements that may not directly reflect reality.
Scientific realism believes that scientific theories accurately represent reality, while anti-realism argues that scientific theories are only useful tools for making predictions and do not necessarily reflect the true nature of reality.
Formal Qualities generally means the most important and unique aspects about something. However, when mentioning Formal Qualities in art, it has a completely different meaning. It turns into an 'umbrella term' meaning it covers many different various aspects. When talking about Formal Qualities regarding a painting (for example) it means talk about the brushwork, the use of colour, the composition (arrangement) of the objects in their work, the space or lack of it and its effect. Plus, you could look at how the artists have created ddepth in their work (use of colour, blurring, perspective.) Also, look at how the artist has created form (3D objects) - tone, highlights.

Individual characters were seen as helpless products of heredity and environment, motivated by strong instinctual drives from within and harassed by social and economic pressures from without. Naturalism is a type of "realism" usually characterized by a pessimistic world view. Naturalism is different from realism in two major parts: subject matter and the

Realism is accepting the physical reality over romantic ideals. Realism is when a person has to accepted something. Something realism comes at an odd moment.
Europeans historically favored art that showcased realism, technical skill, and emotional expression. Realism allowed for detailed representations of the world, while technical skill demonstrated the artist's mastery of materials and techniques. Emotional expression connected viewers to the artwork on a personal level, often evoking strong feelings or reflections on the human experience. These qualities were especially prominent during movements such as the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
