What is man according to Saint Augustine?

What does the story of creation tell us about man?

The story of creation depicts man as a special and beloved creation of God, made in His image and given dominion over all other creatures on earth. It emphasizes man's responsibility to care for and steward the earth, as well as the importance of relationships with God and fellow humans.

Would God create things we don't need?

Man was only one of God's creations among many others. God certainly would create things which man does not need. Man does not need mosquitos but he has ceated them. In God's eyes, man and bird and beast all have their significance, sense, meaning, purpose, message and mission. Though they are interdependent, one is not created for the exclusive use of another. Grass is now relatively not in direct use to human beings as they are to the cows, baffalos and deer. But if man suddenly stops eating meat and turns to eating grass, grass suddenly becomes of direct use to us. All creations thus have their own individual existence while serving as food, host, stimulant or something else for the others.
