At the end of the 19th century, a number of discoveries were made in physics which paved the way for the breakthrough of modern physics and led to the revolutionary technical development that is continually changing our daily lives. The US obtained Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American war in 1898. US also obtained Cuba and Philipeans but only kept Puerto Rico. The Treaty of Paris of 1898 which settled the war between Spain and the U.S. granted the victor all American colonies belonging to Spain. That meant Cuba and Puerto Rico. Since the independence movement in Cuba was championed by the US press, it was impossible politically to justify keeping it as a colony. Thus it was granted independence. Even though many were against Spanish colonial rule in Puerto Rico and the Philippines, this was not widely known in the US so it was possible to keep them. The independence movement in the Philippines was helped by the fact that it was independent right before the signing of the treaty and the resistance to US rule. Also the invasion by Japan during the 2nd World War helped fuel the movement. Puerto Rico was declared an autonomous region of Spain in 1897 but this was revoked before the end of Spanish rule. The fight against Spanish rule culminated with the Grito de Lares, a revolt that was crushed by the Spanish government. As the Puerto Rico economy improved during the 60's, the independence movement was reduced to less than 10% of the population and was actually championed by Puerto Ricans residing in the US.
This can be a very valuable BB Rifle. So let me explain. There are about 17 different variations of the 20th century BB rifle over a period of 4 different models. Starting in1898 and ending around 1910. The information is too large to list here and the price value is very wide starting from a "Poor" condition to an "Very good" condition rifle. The spread can be as far as $75 to $2000. I suggest you locate a "Bluebook of airguns" and do a little reading because you will have to identify your variation first, then the condition of the rifle to determine the value. My catalogue list over a page of information dedicated to this rifle alone. Contact me on my message board if you have any questions to assist you.
Today radium has only limited applications in research laboratories, for example for the preparation of radon standard solutions, in neutron sources of the type Ra-Be, etc. Possible use in radiotherapy of some cancers. Radium was used in the past for luminescent painting of watches and other instruments, was used in toothpaste, cosmetics, etc. These applications are not permitted now because radium is strongly radioactive and dangerous.
