The subject matter of ethics is the study of moral principles and values that guide human behavior and decision-making. It explores concepts such as right and wrong, good and bad, and principles for determining what actions are morally permissible or impermissible. Ethics addresses questions about how individuals and societies should behave and interact with one another to promote well-being and justice.
Plato's favorite subject was philosophy, particularly metaphysics and epistemology. He was known for his discussions on ethics, politics, and the nature of reality.
When you look "deep into the matter," you do not take the subject matter at face value. Instead, you examine the subject matter upon an empirical basis. That is, you apply the scientific method to the subject matter.
Deontological ethics focuses on following rules and duties, while virtue ethics emphasizes developing good character traits. Deontological ethics is rule-based, while virtue ethics is focused on the moral character of the individual.
“Ethics” is plural; “ethic” is singular. People usually use the term in the plural (“ethics”), as in, “Ethics are an important part of any successful business.” However, “ethic” (singular) is also seen on occasion: “He has a great work ethic.”
Ethics plays a very important part in the critical thinking process. Ethics is literally morals that you hold to even when no one is watching you. In critical thinking, ethics influences the way you will think on a subject depending on what you believe. In decision-making, your personal ethics may prevent you from making a 'the end justifies the means' type of thing, regardless of having a good alternative.
